KeymasterThey’ve applied to operate pub hours. Is there a licence at North King Street they can transfer?
TheBeerNut
KeymasterThat’ll be a tough one. I hope it works for them, and that they can make an easy exit if it doesn’t.
Strange it’s so bad for footfall. I blame the Wide Streets Commission.

KeymasterQuick update on this. The project has been renamed “Know Your Beer” and expanded to be an overall consumer guide to reading beer labels: what’s mandatory, what the commonly-used phrases actually signify, what sharp practices are common and what’s coming down the line in EU law. The plan is to launch the website in April.

KeymasterHooray! Spend the spare 50c wisely.
TheBeerNut
KeymasterShould do. Let us know if they don’t.
Anywhere I’ve used them recently, they ring in the full price on the till, but discount the amount on the card reader. There used to be a button on the till but there isn’t any more.

KeymasterThanks for the heads-up. The code was deactivated while the Black Friday sale was happening, I’m told it’s working again now. Let me know if not.

KeymasterI’ve mostly seen it on wines so far, and other beers in Aldi, so it could be that Aldi UK & Ireland was the driver behind it. Silly foreigns, thinking that the law was actually going to change.
TheBeerNut
KeymasterThese started to appear when producers began shipping products which, at least theoretically, would be still on sale in May 2026 when the law was originally due to come into force. Now that that’s been moved to September 2028 (with a hope of total repeal and replacement with a single European standard) we might see them disappear again, or at least no new ones introduced. The requirement to include the calorie count is what makes it a particular annoyance, because it has to be done separately for each individual product — distributors can’t just get a big roll of stickers, like with Re-Turn.
The full spec is in SI 249/2023.
I heard, second-hand, that if this goes into force, Grand Cru might be able to get Duvel to comply, but smaller foreign producers won’t. My hope is that, since there’s vast non-compliance with the alcohol sales regulations we already have, that this one could be ignored too.

KeymasterThat’s the numbers locked in. See you all on Saturday!

KeymasterJust saw Liam saying he’s not actually going to be there, he just wrote the recipes for the new beers.
TheBeerNut
KeymasterIt’s non-ticketed. The pub doesn’t normally open until 5 so I guess they’re opening especially for this.

KeymasterI went along for a look yesterday evening. It’s a nice place with a good selection of beers including Scraggy Bay, Ambush and to current specials from Wicklow Wolf. It was busy with techie types, unsurprisingly, being right by Google’s offices.
TheBeerNut
KeymasterOpened yesterday, by the looks of things.
