According to the off licence manager of a Tesco I am on very good terms with, Solas red ale despite being a strong seller, with a lovely taste and aroma, better value by price, strength and ingredient quality is being discontinued.

Replaced with yet another pale ale. It irritates me that classic style brewing is continuing to ignored or mocked by microbreweries who do not understand beer consumption statistics. “Irish red ale” is the best selling type of ale in Ireland, it reeks of madness.

I should clarify that it was better than Smithwicks red regarding price, strength and ingredient quality.

I’m sure if it was selling as they wanted, they would have kept it. Tesco doesn’t do these things for any reason other than maximising profit.

Fair enough but it was a lovely ale at least in my view.

I agree. It was a regular in my fridge restocking expeditions. O’Hara’s Red is taking its place for me.

O’ Hara’s red is more bitter than Solas red ale. One of the things about Solas Red ale I loved was the affordability of an ale that matched my preference for ale which is ale on the pretty sweet side like Brehon Killany Red, Sullivans red, Dundalk bay red, Heaney red, White Deer rua red ale.

    I feel your pain.

I am still devastated over the retirement of the Carlow’s Traditional Irish Red Ale by Aldi.

The best beer ever produced on this Island and the recipe torn to shreds and never used again.

    RIP to both brews.

Dew Drop have a presumably new red which has recently appeared in my local shop, Bushwacked, which seems quite decent. But I can’t remember what the Solas tasted like at this stage!

I feel a lot like a mild ale drinker from the 1960’s to 2000’s.

Good to hear about dew drop making one, but is it a American style one?
