Indie Beer Week 2021

After a one-year hiatus, the Independent Craft Brewers of Ireland are bringing Indie Beer Week back for 2021. The event will run from 17th to 23rd May. This year, unsurprisingly, the action will be largely virtual, centring on online tasting events organised by Craic Beer Community, facilitated by BeerCloud.ie.

Beer of the Year 2021

The tenth annual Beoir beer awards took place during January, with members voting on their favourite beers of the previous twelve months. No shortlists, no style guides, no expert judges: all winners were picked solely on the basis of how much the drinking public enjoyed them. Beoir members made their selections from all the beers […]

Europe’s definitive guide to beer styles

The European Beer Consumers Union has launched its ‘one stop shop’ for information about different beer styles across the continent and further afield. The Beer Styles of Europe and Beyond has been published by the European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) to provide everyone from connoisseurs to those new to the world of beer with a […]

Beoir at 10

Today marks ten years since Beoir was formally established, on 1st July 2010. It doesn’t seem like all that long ago but it’s safe to say that the world of Irish beer has changed immeasurably since then. Beoir’s objectives have similarly moved with the times. Back then, “craft beer” was very much a minority interest, […]

DirectFromBrewery.com: direct sales for difficult times

With the independent beer industry facing an uncertain future during the covid-19 pandemic, it’s more important than ever to support it. Irish licensing laws give breweries very little scope to sell directly to the public. Several are now offering delivery or collection from the brewery directly, and these have been compiled into a new website: […]

Beer of the Year 2020

The opening weeks of the new decade saw Beoir once again taking the pulse of the Irish beer scene, assessing it via the eyes and palates of its members. This is the ninth annual awards, in which the drinkers en masse choose their favourite Irish beers from the previous calendar year. Any beer brewed on […]

Cask Ales & Strange Brews 2020

The Franciscan Well Brewpub’s annual winter beer festival, Cask Ales & Strange Brews, always features a most interesting selection of one-offs and special editions from Irish breweries. As is traditional at this stage, Beoir was invited to assemble a team of judges to put the beers through their paces and pick category winners and the […]

This Is How It Changes

“Should one of the state’s leading cultural institutions be shilling for a drinks company?” So opened a section of the Atticus column in The Sunday Times of 15th December 2019. It had been prompted by a tweet from the Irish Museum of Modern Art, celebrating a co-operative venture among companies and organisations in Dublin 8. […]

Beer of the Year 2019

While the Irish brewing scene hasn’t grown as much in the last twelve months as it has in recent years, the task of picking a best beer from the hundred or so operational breweries has not got any easier. In this the eighth edition of the competition, 73 different beers received a preference from a […]

Review: CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide: Belgium

Veteran beer writer Tim Webb has been publishing a guide to Belgian beer and pubs since 1992. This and the previous edition in 2014 were co-edited by the Europe-based American writer Joe Stange. A short essay by Webb at the front of the book charts the origin of the guide and announces his retirement from […]
