Aldi have a Brewdog beer I’ve not seen before, “Malt Fiction”, which has the giant, not quite required yet, cancer warnings on it – presumably to some standard format? Though its entirely in English which I expect will cause some complaints.

Takes up more space than every countries DRS icons etc. Definitely going to cause huge trouble to even over-sticker this if this is what’s required.

These started to appear when producers began shipping products which, at least theoretically, would be still on sale in May 2026 when the law was originally due to come into force. Now that that’s been moved to September 2028 (with a hope of total repeal and replacement with a single European standard) we might see them disappear again, or at least no new ones introduced. The requirement to include the calorie count is what makes it a particular annoyance, because it has to be done separately for each individual product — distributors can’t just get a big roll of stickers, like with Re-Turn.

The full spec is in SI 249/2023.

I heard, second-hand, that if this goes into force, Grand Cru might be able to get Duvel to comply, but smaller foreign producers won’t. My hope is that, since there’s vast non-compliance with the alcohol sales regulations we already have, that this one could be ignored too.

Interesting that I’ve not seen any yet before, should be plenty of May 26 dated stock around, although maybe a lot of Irish products having 6 or 9 month BBE windows may have stopped much getting out.

On a side note to that, I got a bottled beer in a hotel in Zurich last week with a BBE date in late 2027! Assuming 24 months.

I’ve mostly seen it on wines so far, and other beers in Aldi, so it could be that Aldi UK & Ireland was the driver behind it. Silly foreigns, thinking that the law was actually going to change.

Seen another in the wild, on an Irish owned but UK made beer – Heverlee; in a Centra.
