Just noticed this in the report in the Independent about Carlow’s recent fund raising:
Last year, the company acquired Alltech’s Pearse Lyons Brewery in Dundalk. Previous reports indicated that Alltech was reviewing the future of its brewery, leading to local fears that the former Macardle Moore Brewery site would be wound down.
That’s probably a good thing, but I can’t imagine there’s much brand equity to be had, or much value in keeping the Dundalk brewery’s lights on. I’m guessing the own-brand deals with Aldi and Tesco are most of what PL had going for it, and they’re never long-term things.
From Beoir’s point of view, the change in ownership means Pearse Lyons beer becomes Irish craft.
There are still some bits and pieces of Macardle brewing heritage on the Dundalk site, which I’d hope are kept somehow. Includes the tasting/tours bar, which they reopened for a former staff night a few months ago.
I have been drinking more Pearse Lyons stuff in recent months, mainly because it’s quite cheap for what it is. O’Haras have preserved the Boyne Brewhouse brand for 5.5 years now, so I’d assume at very least the brand names will be kept; not that they’re particularly strong
