grain 16 years 10 months ago #1

Hi guys due to a bit of frustration with the Irish brewing shops i've decided to have a go at it myself. I'm not finished sourcing suppliers and my money will only go so far at the begining but i'm gonna start with grain and hopefully move on with a bit of time. Is there any grains ye guys would like to see supplied? I'm pretty sure i can knock €10 off a 25kg bag of Maris Otter for forum members (€53 delivered) which is €63 delivered from H+G or G+G. Not sure yet about prices for smaller quantities but i'll beat what we already have or i won't be doing what i set out to do and i'll leave it to the big boys. If it works out i'll move on to pretty much anything ye guys want and hopefully some shiny things for the magpies like myself .

AT,

Best of luck with this, I'll be needing a 25kg bag of pale malt in a couple of months so you're on my list.

Doh! Just bought a 25Kg sack. It isn't even open yet.

Best of luck with your venture.

In general, I buy 25Kg sacks of pale malt, 3Kg bags of wheat and crystal malt, and smaller quantities of other speciality malts like special B.

How will you be shipping the stuff?

AT,

Don't know if you've decided on your suppliers yet but Charles Faram seem to be the cheapest for bulk grain (25kg bags) as their main market is commercial brewers. They will sell you the bags at about £12 STG.

I enquired in the past but it would have needed about 4 bags to make it economical when shipping was taken into consideration. It would have been more suitbale for a group buy. If you're ordering several bags then the shipping per bag becomes very reasonable as it's a fixed shipping charge up to 500kg...

I can't remember off hand and I lost the email they sent me. As far as I remember it was £60 for 4 bags which gave a rough total of £100 (grain plus shipping).

25kg bags is the minimum they will do. For not much more they will ship up to half a tonne (maybe it was £80 but I can't remember). They stock a wide range of malt and hops - the hops come in 5kg bags though so you'd want to be brewing a lot or buy as group (or a budding homebrew shop )to make it work.
