Cathal McDermott won 1st with a farmhouse ale, Rossa came 2nd or 3rd not sure which with a partigyle IPA of ~2.5%. Can't remember the other prize winner.

Highlights included a basil saison, coffee stout and Reuben's robust porter.[/quote:3cqsnsjp]

Jacob took 2nd place and Rossa took 3rd.

A first and second to the "North County Brewers" sub-section of the NHC - what can I say .

Congratualtions to all and in particular (to show no bias) I would like to say that Rossa's L.A. I.P.A (at 2.5%) should be brewed commercially ( the 2 judges from Porterhouse agreed with me ). It was a technological masterpiece of a light beer

I'm not sure the judges understood my Burton pale ale was a recreation of Truman #4 from the 1870s. It was supposed to be very sweet

That said, it was a good experiment to see what beer judges thought of the beer without knowing any more about it other than being a Burton style pale ale.

I am surprised that my Porter didn't do too well. I thought it was a sure bet to come close with Rossa's American Stout.

The judges were just given a description of the beer, No BJCP style number!, so we had to interpret the description and match it to a BJCP style.

I think if we were told it was an old recipe and the yeast was not so effective in those days and/or they liked a sweeter beer from Burton it would have helped!

One brew we were asked to judge was a "Port Style Cider"

You should try working those sour grapes into your next brew

I missed it and I also entered ihp '13 into the competition so would be nice to compare them
