If you're going with a bonded warehouse, that will have set-up costs from the Revenue, I'd say, plus you need a bank willing to give you a bond -- is your business model that convincing? If you're not going with the warehouse, you will (I assume -- can anyone confirm this?) have to write a cheque to the Revenue Commissioners every time you produce a batch of beer as soon as it's ready for market.

And how much is the brewing tax? It's quite low in America, Calagione says 7$ per 31 gallons. If you were a small producer you'd be much better off just writing that cheque every time you brewed and taking that as a cost rather than forking out for a bonded warehouse. Unless it's way higher here. But didn't we recently half the duty payable by micros?

yup the duty was halved for microbreweries but the tax on alcoholic products in ireland is crazy high by comparison to the U.S., i'm not extremely knowledgeable in this area but i was told that something like 1/3rd of the final price of your pint ends up in the revenue coffers. it would be great if somebody could actually get their hands on the real figures i've never been able to find the info.

There's a Revenue leaflet here[/url:1j5cb5bk].

Full beer duty is €19.87 per hectolitre per cent of alcohol, making microbrewed beer €9.94.
[i:1j5cb5bk][b:1j5cb5bk]2010 Update: [/b:1j5cb5bk] now €15.87 full, €7.94 for microbreweries.[/i:1j5cb5bk]

So the duty on a 500ml bottle at 5% ABV is 25c ([i:1j5cb5bk]2010: 20c[/i:1j5cb5bk]), by my reckoning. Is that right?

well that's comparable to the US at least- 7$ per 117L (and that was back a while. probably more like 9 or so) vs 10€ per 100L. I still think depending on your batch size you'd be better paying the duty as you brew.
