actually, is this a pared down version of the 2004 book www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/97 ... e-Database , which seems to have twice as many pages? or is it just a different format?[/quote:1v6uljqp]

Richie,

No, it isn't pared down. One of the problems with the 1st edition was that it was so big it became very expensive. With the 2nd edition I have edited the data such that I get much more information on each page. So instead of 3 or 4 beers per page there are about 15! This meant I could get a lot more data in fewer pages.

It is mainly the number of pages that add to the production costs so I ended up doing a number of things to try and keep the page count down as well as the editing described above such as tweaking font sizes, borders and some rationalisation of data, but I have been careful to not lose any important brewing data in this process. So, again, not pared down but [i:1v6uljqp]much[/i:1v6uljqp] more in a smaller, less expensive package. A win-win?

Cheers,

Les

I'd say a bit of both by the descriptions I've read.[/quote:3c6msoox]

I'd guess that about 98% of the reduction in page count was due to reformating and about 2% by consolidation of recipes. For example, if a beer has 2 versions such as
A: Pale malt, Crystal malt.
B: 95% Pale malt, 5% Crystal malt.

then A has zero extra information that is also given in B. Therefore, I'll have removed A as a separate entry since it adds nothing useful that isn't in B.

Another example might be:

C: Malt bill: 95% Pale malt, 5% Crystal malt. Hops: Goldings.

D: Malt bill: 95% Pale malt, 5% Crystal malt. Hops: Fuggles.

In this case, in the 2nd edition I'll have given this as: Malt bill: 95% Pale malt, 5% Crystal malt. Hops: Fuggles or Goldings.

Hopefully, you'll agree that nothing has effectively been removed in either case, but pages (and therefore £/$/€) will have been saved.

The first edition was actually first published in 2001, and was 666 pages long (spooky). Les must have done a lot of pruning to squeeze the new addition down to 366 pages (less spooky).[/quote:3c6msoox]

Yes, 666 pages was a bit spooky but apparently 666 is due to a mistranslation of the bible and apparently the real number of the beast is actually 616 [url:3c6msoox]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast[/url:3c6msoox]

A more spooky thing may be the 666 bus in Moscow that apparently had its number changed...to 616!

Cheers,

Les

Well, I'll certainly be another brewer buying this book. Sounds like it'll be a really handy reference tool. Congratulations on the second edition Les!

Any way us here in Ireland can block order and keep the shipping costs down?
