It's very hard to find a concrete answer for the question:
How many distilleries are there in Ireland?
For years it was three big ones, Middleton, Jameson and Bushmills and Cooley.
I know the amount of names doesn't reflect the number of distilleries because i.e. Cooley making a lot of individual whiskies, but now I'm sure there must be more than this, with Dingle and Teeling being the obvious additions. But what are the likes of Clontarf? I know they're not Cooley.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me, it's been nagging me for ages.
Every Irish whiskey on sale now is still from one of the three companies mentioned, but that's changing, with Carlow and Dingle in operation and lots more probably not far behind.
They keep a list[/url:2ez7fyw8] of active distilleries at The Irish Whiskey Society, and they have a forum[/url:2ez7fyw8] over there too.
