I’ve been needing a mash tun for some time now and after a long search through the mountains of junk I eventually found a long lost old ice box and decided to give it a go using what I could find around the house. I'm fairly useless at DIY etc so this proves that anyone can do it!

You will need:

  • 4 Copper elbows
  • 3 Tees
  • Tap and connector
  • Washers and bolts
  • Ice-Box
  • Drill
  • Hack saw

1: Assemble the manifold. With PVC tubing this is fairly easy, just cut the pipes into required lengths with a sharp knife and assemble using the elbows and Tees. Then cut the slots using a hack saw, about ½ inch apart.

2: Drill hole into Ice box and attach tap. Some washers and bolts are needed to prevent leaks

All in all it took about 45 minutes to get it all sorted and fitting properly. I tried it out later with a mini all grain brew and it worked reasonably well. A few adjustments are needed to improve flow but think this can be done by increasing the size/number of slots. If anyone else has suggestions please let me know. I can’t really put any cost on it as everything was found around the house except the tap.
